【January 17, 2024】High School Students Visit Project Lab in IMSUT

On January 17, 2024, six students from the Senior High School Affiliated to Showa Pharmaceutical University visited the Research Center for Asian Infectious Diseases (Project Laboratory at IMSUT). At the beginning of the visit, they received a briefing on the research from Senior Assistant Prof. Mizuki Yamamoto and an explanation of the project’s structure and the collaboration with China from Project Prof. Mitsue Hayashi. Afterward, they moved on to the laboratory for hands-on experience, which included observing live cells through a microscope.

On 18 December 2023, Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director), Project Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue, Project Prof. Mitsue Hayashi, Project Senior Assistant Prof. Mizuki Yamamoto and Ms. Kiyomi Nakagawa (Senior Technical Specialist) had a meeting and exchanged information on infectious diseases with Prof. Xiyun Yan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences). The meeting was held on the occasion of Prof. Yan’s visit to IMSUT for her activity of the International Joint Usage/Research Center, an MEXT project.

【December 8, 2023】Prof. Kaixia Mi Gives a Seminar at IMSUT

Dr. Kaixia Mi (Professor, Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences) visited IMSUT as part of the International Joint Usage/Research Center activity in which she is currently engaged and gave a seminar titled “Exploring the Complex Interactions Among Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Host, and Antibiotics”. Prof. Mi also had a meeting for future collaborative research projects with Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director), Project Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue, Project Prof. Mitsue Hayashi and Project Senior Assistant Prof. Mizuki Yamamoto.

【August 4, 2023】LOVE LABO 2023 Laboratory Tour

In the afternoon of the day of LOVE LABO 2023, an annual open seminar, a laboratory tour was organized for those who wished to participate. A total of 32 people in five groups joined this time, as the restrictions due to COVID-19 prevention measures had been lifted. Each group visited two of the five laboratories at the institute. These five laboratories included the Division of Molecular Virology and the Research Center for Asian Infectious Diseases, both led by Project Director Yasushi Kawaguchi. Participants deepened their understanding of infectious diseases research by listening to an overview of the study and learning through hands-on experience.

【August 4, 2023】 Annual Open Seminar LOVE LABO 2023

LOVE LABO 2023, an annual open seminar of IMSUT, was held as last year, on August 4, 2023. This seminar is intended to provide an opportunity for mainly high school and university students who are interested in life and medical sciences to learn about the research on infectious diseases. Chaired by Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director), Prof. Yasuhiko Horiguchi (Osaka University), Associate Prof. Masahiro Kajihara (Hokkaido University), Project Researcher Ayano Fukui (IMSUT), Assistant Prof. Kyoko Futami and Prof. Kentaro Yoshii (Nagasaki University) presented on their respective research topics in an easy-to-understand way. Each lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which more than 80 participants actively asked questions.

【July 28, 2023】Director-General of IM Visits IMSUT

Prof. Wei Qian, the Director-General of Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) and five members of his delegation visited IMSUT. IMCAS has been conducting a collaborative research project with IMSUT since 2005. Prior to the meeting with Prof. Makoto Nakanishi (Dean of IMSUT), the delegation members exchanged their views on the study findings with Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean of IMSUT and Project Director), Prof. Kei Sato, Visiting Prof. Seiya Yamayoshi, Associate Prof. Takeshi Ichinohe, Visiting Associate Prof. Jin Gohda, and Senior Assistant Prof. Mizuki Yamamoto. In the subsequent meeting, the delegation exchanged their perspectives and opinions on future research collaboration with Prof. Nakanishi and other attendees, including Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi, Project Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue, Project Prof, Mitsue Hayashi, and some faculty members.

Prof. Xiyun Yan (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences) visited IMSUT as part of the International Joint Usage/Research Center activity in which she is currently engaged and gave a seminar on nanozymes (a next-generation artificial enzymes). Prof. Yan also had a meeting for future collaborative research projects with Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director), Project Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue, Project Prof. Mitsue Hayashi, Project Associate Prof. Jin Gohda and Project Senior Assistant Prof. Mizuki Yamamoto.

【August 5, 2022】LOVE LABO 2022 Laboratory Tour

On the afternoon of August 5, participants of the Love Labo 2022, an annual open seminar, were invited to a laboratory tour. This time only eleven people joined the tour as there was a limit of three visitors per laboratory due to a measure to prevent infection with the novel coronavirus. The eleven students visited the four laboratories of the institute, including the Division of Molecular Virology and the Research Center for Asian Infectious Diseases, both led by Project Director Yasushi Kawaguchi. During the tour, they had a hands-on experience such as operating a confocal microscope and observing infected cells.

【August 5, 2022】 Annual Open Seminar LOVE LABO 2022

On August 5, 2022, LOVE LABO 2022, an annual open seminar of IMSUT (The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo), was held for the first time in three years. This seminar is intended to provide mainly high school and university students who are interested in life and medical sciences with an opportunity to learn about the research on infectious diseases. The seminar, chaired by Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director), began with a lecture entitled "The Evolution of the Novel Coronavirus" by Prof. Kei Sato of IMSUT. This was followed by lectures by Prof. Tokiko Watanabe (Osaka University); Associate Prof. Michiko Toizumi and Prof. Asuka Nanbo (Nagasaki University); and Prof Chie Nakajima (Hokkaido University). After each lecture, there was a question-and-answer session where an inspiring exchange of views and opinions on each theme took place between more than 60 participants and the researchers.

Mr. Pengyun Xie（Director-General, Bureau of Development Planning, CAS [Chinese Academy of Sciences]） and Mr. Weiping Yang（Director-General, Bureau of Supervision and Audit, CAS） with seven CAS members visited IMSUT (Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo), and had talks and exchanged their opinions with Prof. Yuji Yamanashi (Dean of IMSUT), Prof. Makoto Nakanishi (Vice Dean of IMSUT), Prof. Atsushi Iwama (Vice Dean of IMSUT), Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director) and Project Prof. Mitsue Hayashi. The visitors made a tour of the Medical Science Museum and the Tissue Storage of BioBank Japan during their visit.

LOVE LABO 2019, an annual open seminar of IMSUT (Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo), was held on July 29, 2019. The seminar is intended to provide mainly high school and university students who are interested in life and　medical sciences with an opportunity to learn about the research on infectious diseases. Project Associate Prof. Seiya Yamayoshi delivered a lecture entitled “Antibodies that Protect against Influenza Viruses”. In the afternoon, 30 attendees, those interested in the lab work, were invited to visit five IMSUT laboratories including those of Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Project Director) and Prof. Yoshihiro Kawaoka in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) in the Department of Cancer Biology. The students learned their experimental techniques and had a hands-on experience such as operating a confocal microscope.

LOVE LABO 2018, an annual open seminar of IMSUT (Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo), was held on August 3, 2018. The seminar is intended to provide mainly high school and university students who are interested in life and medical sciences with an opportunity to learn about the research on infectious diseases. Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean and Project Director) delivered a lecture entitled “Troublesome Viruses Escaping from the Human Immune System”. In the afternoon, 35 attendees, those interested in the lab work, were invited to visit five IMSUT laboratories including those of Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi and Prof. Yoshihiro Kawaoka in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) in the Department of Cancer Biology. The students had a hands-on experience such as observing virus particles through an electron microscope.

【July 10, 2018】Young Researchers from China CDC Visit IMSUT

Eleven young researchers from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) visited the Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo, (IMSUT) on July 10, 2018. This visit was part of the Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science (Sakura Science Plan) of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and was conducted in cooperation with the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), a co-adopted sponsor to the program. After learning the history of IMSUT in the Medical Science Museum, they received a briefing on the project China-Japan Research Collaboration on Defense against Emerging and Reemerging Infections from Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean of IMSUT and Project Director). Then, they toured a BSL-3 laboratory of the Division of Virology, and learned its operation system from Associate Prof. Masaki Imai and Assistant Prof. Kiyoko Iwatsuki-Horimoto.

【May 18, 2018】Prof. Ming Sun of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) Visits IMSUT

Prof. Ming Sun（Deputy Director; Bureau of Science and Technology Development, CAS） and Associate Prof. Yan Zeng (Section of Biotechnology, Bureau of Science and Technology Development, CAS) visited IMSUT (Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo), and had a meeting with Prof. Yoshinori Murakami (Dean of IMSUT), Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean and Project Director). This tour was joined by Prof. Shuang Jiang Liu (Director-General of IMCAS (Institute of Microbiology, CAS)), Dr. Juncai Ma (Director; Microbial Resource and Big Data Center, IMCAS) and Ms. Wei Li (Program Officer; Department of Research Project, IMCAS). They exchanged their opinions about the collaborative research and future academic cooperation between China and Japan.

【May 17-19, 2018】 The 12^th China-Japan International Conference of Virology

The 12^th China-Japan International Conference of Virology was held for 3 days from May 17 to 19, 2018 at Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. It was attended by Dr. Deyin Guo (Chairperson of Chinese Society for Virology and Professor of Wuhan University), Dr. Youmei Feng (Deputy President and Professor of Wuhan University), Dr. Ichiro Kurane (Chairperson of Japanese Society for Virology and former Director-General of National Institute of Infectious Diseases) and virologists from both countries. They presented their recent research findings on virus infections in a wide range of studies from molecular biology to animal models to epidemiology. From IMSUT Dr. Takaomi Ishida (Project Associate Professor) also attended the conference and gave a talk on his study. It was a great success with lively discussion, attracting more than 100 participants including many students from Wuhan University, where the conference was held.

【April 26, 2018】Project Director Attends Ambassador’s Spring Party in Beijing

Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean and Project Director) and Prof. Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) attended the Spring Party for the 40th Anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People's Republic of China held at the Japanese Ambassador's Residence in Beijing. They got some words of encouragement from Ambassador Yutaka Yokoi and some officers of the Japan Embassy in China on the China-Japan research collaboration on infectious diseases.

Dr. Jun Arii (Assistant Professor and cooperating scientist) joined “Winter School 2017 for High School Students at RIMD” held at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, (Suita, Osaka) on 25 December 2017. At the event, he used fluorescence microscopy to show the cells infected by herpes simplex virus to the attending students at the exhibition booth entitled “Visualizing Pathogen?”

Dr. Masao Ikeda-Saito (Science and Technology Advisor; Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED)) and some senior staff from AMED visited the Institute of Biophysics (IBP) and made a short tour of research facilities including the China-Japan Joint Laboratory; after the tour Dr. Makoto Suematsu (President of AMED) joined the delegation. The delegation was invited to a dinner meeting held by Professor Zihe Rao (former Director-General of IBP), Professor Ruiming Xu (Vice Director-General of IBP) and some scientists working in IBP. The AMED delegation was accompanied by Dr. Aikichi Iwamoto (Science and Technology Advisor of AMED), Mr. Masahiko Noda (Managing Director; Dept. of International Affairs, AMED), and Ms. Rima Kitakado (Dept. of International Affairs, AMED).

Professor Huanliang Liu, with two of his associates, of Sun Yat-Sen University and a group of five officials of Guangdong Province visited IMSUT and were welcomed by Professor Yoshinori Murakami (Dean of IMSUT) and Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi (Vice Dean of IMSUT and Project Director) on July 11, 2016. They discussed the issues relevant to both Chinese and Japanese sides: extension of the Agreement on Academic Exchange between The University of Tokyo and Sun Yat-Sen University, signed in 2011; the collaborative research project conducted by Dr. Keigo Shibayama (Director; Department of Virology II, National Institute of Infectious Diseases); possible future cooperation between IMSUT and Guangdong Province and Guangzhou-City, where Sun Yat-Sen University is located.

Kazuo Todani (Deputy Minister; Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)), leading a group of people from the MEXT and the Japan Embassy in Beijing, visited the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS), and were welcomed by Prof. Shuang Jiang Liu (Director-General of IMCAS), Dr. Huaiyi Yang (Director; Scientific Program Office, IMCAS), Mr. Shizhuan Zhang (Director; Division of Asian & African Affairs, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS), Mr. Haitao Chen (Program Officer; Division of Asian & African Affairs, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS) and the Japanese scientists working at IM. After speeches made by both parties, Prof. Liu gave an overview of IM and China-Japan Joint Laboratories to them, and exchanged their opinions. Also, the scientists, dispatched from IMSUT and stationed in Beijing, showed them around the joint laboratories.

Dr. Keigo Shibayama (Director; Department of Virology II, National Institute of Infectious Diseases) and Dr. Masato Suzuki (Senior Researcher; Department of Bacteriology II, National Institute of Infectious Diseases), accompanied by Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi (Deputy Dean of IMSUT and Project Director), Professor Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing), Visiting Professor Kunito Yoshiike and Project Professor Mitsue Hayashi from IMSUT, visited the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). There, Dr. Shibayama and Dr. Qiwen Yang of PUMCH discussed issues about drug resistance, considering the possibility of research collaboration.

【November 20, 2015】 MOU between IMSUT and HVRI Enters into Force

The MOU was signed by the representatives form IMSUT and the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute (HVRI), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS). Thus, this research collaboration was agreed to by both parties for another five years from FY 2015 to FY 2019, providing the official basis for the new collaboration.

【November 19, 2015】 Dr. Zene Matsuda Gives Lecture at His Alma Mater High School

Project Prof. Zene Matsuda visited his alma mater, Kochi Prefectural Kochi Otemae High School, and joined the event “Welcome Home Our Seniors!” held by the high school in Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku, Japan's fourth largest island southwest of Japan's main island. There, he delivered a lecture entitled “Scientific Viewpoint for Research on Infectious Diseases” to some 40 first-grade students who wish to study in the scientific field in the future.

【October 27, 2015】 Director-General of CAS Institute of Microbiology Visits IMSUT

Director-General Shuang Jiang Liu and Dr. Juncai Ma of the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, (IMCAS) visited the IMSUT and got a warm welcome from Professor Yoshinori Murakami (Dean of IMSUT), Professor Keiya Ozawa (IMSUT Hospital Director) and Professor Sumiko Watanabe (Chief, Committee of International Exchange). During their visit they met with Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi (Deputy Dean of IMSUT and Project Director) and Professor Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) to discuss how the future research collaboration be conducted and promoted. Also, they made a short tour of the IMSUT facilities.

In a ceremony at IBP Director-General Tao Xu signed the MOU, which had been signed by IMSUT Dean Yoshinori Murakami in Tokyo, in the presence of Drs. Yasushi Kawaguchi (Deputy Dean of IMSUT and Project Director), Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) and some IMSUT members visiting IBP. Now this research collaboration has been agreed to for another five years by both parties, providing official basis for the new collaboration. Dr. Tadahito Kanda (Project Supervisor; Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED)) and Ms. Hiroe Yamazaki (Section Chief; Department of Research Promotion, Division of Infectious Disease Research of AMED, accompanied by Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi (Deputy Dean of IMSUT and Project Director), Professor Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing) and Visiting Professor Kunito Yoshiike from IMSUT, visited the joint laboratories in Beijing. In the PI and Research Progress Meetings the people form AMED and IMSUT discussed the project’s progress and issues with the scientists working in the joint-labs.

【August 5, 2015】 High School Students Attending LOVE LABO 2015 Visit Labs in IMSUT

LOVE LABO 2015, an annual open seminar of IMSUT, was held on August 4, 2015. The seminar is intended to provide mainly high school and university students with an opportunity to learn about the research on infectious diseases. Among the attendees, those interested in the lab work were invited to visit IMSUT laboratories on August 5. Prof. Yasushi Kawaguchi’s lab (Deputy Dean of IMSUT and Project Director) in the Department of Infectious Disease Control accepted four students, who had hands-on experience such as observing live cells through a microscope.

Professor Yoshinori Murakami (Dean of IMSUT), accompanied by Professor Yasushi Kawaguchi (Deputy Dean and Project Director), Professor Jun-ichiro Inoue (Chief of China-Japan Joint Laboratories in Beijing), Visiting Professor Kunito Yoshiike, and Dr. Aikichi Iwamoto (Former Project Director), paid a courtesy visit to IPBCAS and IMCAS in Beijing. On April 29, the delegation visited the IBPCAS to meet with Professor Tao Xu (Director-General), Professor Ming Sun (Deputy Director-General), Mr. Haitao Chen (Division of Asian and African Affairs, Bureau of International Cooperation of Chinese Academy of Sciences), and some IBPCAS members. On April 30, they visited the IMCAS to meet with Professor Shuang-Jiang Liu (Director-General), Professor Xiuzhu Dong (Deputy Director-General),and some IMCAS members. The delegation exchanged their views with IBPCAS and IMCAS scientists on how the future research collaboration be promoted.
